Rai Black Mustard is a kind of spice queen. Its seeds have a nutty aroma and a sharper, more tart taste than yellow mustard. It is used not only as a spice but also as a natural circulatory stimulant, as well as to facilitate breathing and cleanse the bronchi. It possesses strong antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.
Mustard is widely used in folk medicine. Even Hippocratic physicians wrote that it promotes bowel function and urination. At the same time, they warned that mustard, due to its pungency, is harmful to the stomach. Combined with honey, it was given internally for chest diseases as an expectorant, for chronic cough, as well as for the treatment of animal bites and poisoning by poisonous mushrooms. It was also used for pulmonary hemorrhages, epilepsy, fever, chronic tonsillitis, and pleurisy.
An 18th-century Russian herbalist wrote: “Spices for dishes, with their pungency, not only increase appetite, but also, stimulating the gastric fibers, promote digestion and thin thick phlegm.”
Mustard powder is used for general and foot baths as a means of stimulating blood circulation, deepening breathing, and facilitating sputum expectoration. The antiseptic and anti-inflammatory action of mustard is noted, which is useful in tuberculosis lesions of the lymph nodes.
Mustard also has antimicrobial and antifungal properties, which served as the basis for using a solution of mustard powder to treat foot mycoses. Mustard ointment is used to treat psoriasis and neurodermatitis.
Mustard is widely used in phytocosmetics for skin and hair care.
Instructions for use:
For preparing baths: 200 g of powder is mixed in 1 liter of warm water and poured into the bath. The bath is taken at a temperature of 35-36°C for 5-6 minutes, after which you should rinse and wrap yourself in a blanket. Foot baths with mustard powder for 10 minutes are effective for colds (but only in the first hours).
For gastritis: use unmilled mustard seeds with water. Start with one seed and increase to twenty, adding one seed daily. After reaching twenty seeds, reduce by one seed per day, gradually decreasing to none. Drink in the mornings, on an empty stomach. This remedy is also used for dyspepsia.
Mustard plasters: use for colds, bronchitis, pleurisy, insomnia, bronchial asthma (apply to calves), bronchopneumonia, rheumatism, neuritis. For reflex action on blood circulation function in hypertensive crisis, stroke, angina pectoris, mustard plasters are placed on the chest, heart area, nape of the neck, and calf muscles.
For colds and flu, chronic rhinitis: pour mustard powder into socks and wear them for several days.
For hiccups: put a little mustard into a teaspoon, add table vinegar, mix until a paste is obtained, and apply it to about one-third of the surface of the tongue. The sensation will be unpleasant, but you need to endure for 2-4 minutes, then rinse your mouth with warm water. Hiccups disappear almost instantly, sometimes even before rinsing your mouth.
Hair and scalp care: moderately dry and oily hair can be washed with mustard. To do this, pour a tablespoon of dry mustard with 400 ml of warm water, mix thoroughly, apply the mixture to the hair and scalp, gently rub in, and rinse after 2-3 minutes. For baldness, thoroughly mix mustard powder in warm (no higher than 60°C) water and lubricate the bald areas with the resulting paste until intense burning sensation appears. Then wash off the mustard. Repeat the procedure daily. If the hair does not start to grow within a month, further use of mustard is impractical.
For treating pigmentation: pour mustard powder with warm water, mix to a paste consistency and lubricate the pigmented areas of the skin. After the appearance of intense burning, wash off the mustard and wipe the skin dry. Perform the procedure every other day. The course is 10 glasses or more.
Contraindications: dilated blood vessels of the skin and excessive hair growth on the face in women, acute inflammation of the kidneys, pulmonary tuberculosis.
