Tilak is a Vaishnava ornament that serves as protection and contributes to karma purification. Moreover, even when ordinary people see tilak, they contemplate Krishna and become purified.

Everyone who wears tilak made from gopi-chandan receives blessings that many strive for years, sometimes a lifetime, to obtain. Such a devotee brings eternal benefit not only to themselves but also to those they come into contact with.

Applying tilak to the body is a sacred process performed in a meditative state, spiritually uplifting the individual on all levels. The Vasudeva Upanishad lists twelve key points on the human body where tilak should be placed. These twelve points correspond to specific spheres of the universe. Each sphere of the universe is overseen by a specific incarnation of Vishnu. The Vedas state that the microcosm is built in the image of the macrocosm. Therefore, the twelve points where tilak is applied energetically connect our body to the entire universe and help it harmonize with the surrounding world.

In Sanskrit, these twelve points are also called marmas. Marmas are special sensitive or vulnerable points. When we apply tilak, it provides protection on a subtle level from negative influences.
